The International Spanish Academy (ISA) at Okeeheelee Middle School organized the 3rd United Nations Model Assembly where students from the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program also participated.
Student delegations from Student delegations from Mexico, Bolivia, Argentina, Ethiopia, Russia, Guyana, South Korea, United States, Cambodia and Netherlands discussed different topics, provided points of information and made decisions to solve worldwide issues. The countries were chosen based on diversity and to provide different viewpoints based on culture, economic status and political views.
“The International Spanish Academy faculty and students have worked hard to create a special and meaningful event to demonstrate the power of diplomacy,” said Dr. Samore, Principal.
Some of the topics discussed Child Exploitation, Nuclear Terrorism Prevention Global Debt Crisis and Fresh Water Scarcity Each student had a country project assigned and conducted research about the population, economic status and political views. The committees, which included environmental, human rights, socio-economic and security, were formed and students determined a problem that applied to all countries so it can be debated.
The most important aspect of this exercise is to teach students that continuous dialogue is fundamental to the peace of our planet and that students can be active participants in bringing peace to our world.
